About Nagoya Castle
Nagoya Castle was originally built in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a strategic defense in the west of his new shogunate. Known as an architectural marvel of the Edo period, Nagoya Castle’s signature golden shachihoko (a mythical sea creature with the head of a tiger) has become a famous emblem of the city. Though the original castle was destroyed during WWII, the castle keep was rebuilt in 1959, and in 2018, the magnificent Hommaru Palace was faithfully restored to its former glory.
Surrounded by the expansive Meijo Park, the castle grounds bloom with flowers and seasonal plants, creating a peaceful space to stroll and take in the atmosphere of historic Japan.
Highlights of Nagoya Castle
1. The Golden Shachihoko
Nagoya Castle’s golden shachihoko figures are dazzling symbols of the castle’s grandeur and resilience. Each of these golden ornaments at the top of the castle keep weighs about 88 kg of pure gold. Besides their aesthetic appeal, they served as talismans believed to protect against fire. Replica shachihoko statues are displayed on-site, offering a close-up look at these exquisite symbols of Nagoya.
2. Hommaru Palace
Hommaru Palace is a remarkable restoration of the residence where the Owari lords once lived and worked. With intricate, golden wall paintings and stunning sliding door art depicting tigers and pine trees, this space showcases the height of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. From delicate latticework to richly painted walls, the palace offers a window into the grandeur of Japan’s feudal era.
3. Panoramic View from the Main Keep
The castle’s main keep offers an impressive panoramic view of Nagoya City. The top floor of the keep is a fantastic spot for photography, and on clear days, you can even see distant mountains on the horizon. The views are especially striking during cherry blossom season, when the grounds are adorned with pink and white blooms.
4. Seasonal Gardens and Meijo Park
Surrounding Nagoya Castle is Meijo Park, which is beautiful year-round. In spring, the cherry blossoms are a highlight, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. During cherry blossom season, the castle grounds are illuminated for nighttime viewing, creating an enchanting scene. Meijo Park also has cafes and scenic areas, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy nature.
